ABSTRACT

This study did an assessment of the perception of social work rehabilitation process of victims of drug by students: A study of Psychiatric Hospital, Benin City. The study adopted the survey research design on the basis of which data were sourced from targeted respondents from Psychiatric Hospital Uselu, Benin City. The data was analysed using simple percentage and chi-square technique. The result shows that there is level of awareness of the consequences of the long term effect of the drug addiction. The results also demonstrate that social workers rehabilitation programmes reduce the psychological effect of drug addiction. The result revealed that social workers rehabilitation programmes promote individual and collective well-being of drug addicts. The study recommends that in order to reduce the scourge of drug addiction in the society, or reduces its economic costs, the following recommendations are hereby made that, social workers should be trained to identify and assess the needs of their clients beyond the scope of their initial presenting problem. Government or non-governmental organizations should help in creating job opportunities for social workers who will help in fighting the battle against drug addictions. Drug addicts should be enlighten that drug and alcohol use can lead to other chronic diseases such as diabetes and heart disease. Social workers should design strategies to create environments and conditions that support behavioural health and the ability of individuals to withstand challenges.
