ABSTRACT
This research work is aimed at investigating the effects of Covid-19 on the elderly in the Egor Local Government area of Edo State. A descriptive survey was adopted for this research. A primary source of data collection was utilized and a total of 100 questionnaires were sampled and used for this research. Descriptive statistics using SPSS was used to analyse the data from the questionnaire.
The result of the study showed that the covid-19 pandemic caused tremendous negative effects on the health of elderly persons across the world with Nigeria being one of the countries greatly impacted due to insufficient working medical sector in the country. The covid-19 made elderly persons mentally imbalanced, made elderly persons depressed and even to a large extent increased their anxiety levels. The pandemic created fear in the minds of elderly persons and thus exacerbated the risk of mental health problems. The pandemic increased the consumption level of elderly persons and reduced exercise which was detrimental to their health, and the idleness resulted in increased health. It was also concluded that the covid-19 lockdown resulted in a lack of willpower among elderly persons and resulted in an increased mental imbalance among elderly persons. It was recommended that Government should ensure that the elderly in society are given adequate consideration should in the case of subsequent this world and ensure that adequate health facilities are built for the elderly in society so that subsequent pandemic will not affect their physical health.
