AN ASSESSMENT OF THE EFFECT OF LARGE CLASS SIZE ON EFFECTIVE LEARNING OF RELIGION EDUCATION STUDENTS IN THE UNIVERSITY OF BENIN, BENIN CITY, EDO STATE

ABSTRACT

This research study investigated the assessment of the effect of large class size on effective learning of religion and education in the University of Benin, Benin City, Edo State. In the process of the research study, four research questions were raised to guide the study. Survey research technique was used as the research method for this study. The data gotten from the research study was analysed using percentage and frequency table. The purpose of this study was to assess the effect of large class size on effective learning of religion and education in the University of Benin, Benin City, Edo State and also give ideas of how a good learning environment can be achieved through good small and standard lecture halls. In order to figure out these research problems, various methodology was used such as population of the study and sample and sampling techniques and the research instrument used in collecting data were a two structured questionnaire, Section A and Section B. The first section was organised to obtain the demographic information from the respondents while the second section was designed to get the information of the topics under investigation. The instrument was reviewed and  validated by the project supervisor and other experts in the Department of Educational Foundations, Faculty of Education, University of Benin, Benin City. The findings gotten from the research study indicates that large class size makes it very difficult for students to get the best of learning in the University of Benin. We also saw that small classes and more lecturers are needed for a good learning process. As a result of these findings, certain recommendations were gotten and they are necessary in order to bring about the best teaching and learning process in the University of Benin.
