Abstract

This research explores social media usage and the mental well-being of young individuals in Benin City, particularly focusing on the experience of depression. Employing a survey methodology and drawing upon the Social Comparison Theory and the Uses and Gratifications Theory, the study reveals a concerning trend: a substantial proportion of young people in Benin City report an increase in feelings of depression since they initiated their use of social media. In response to these findings, a set of recommendations were proposed. Firstly, parents and educators should engage in open and informative dialogues with young people, aiming to promote responsible and balanced social media usage. Secondly, a robust emphasis on digital literacy and online safety education is necessary to empower young individuals to navigate the online landscape securely and positively. Thirdly, the study underscores the importance of readily accessible mental health support and awareness programs. Collaborative efforts among educational institutions, parents, and mental health professionals are crucial for identifying and assisting those grappling with negative emotions effectively.Furthermore, the study suggests leveraging social media platforms for community and educational initiatives. This approach aims to facilitate positive social interactions among young people and to establish supplementary support networks, given that a significant portion of respondents express a sense of increased social connection and support through social media. These recommendations are designed to address the intricate interplay between social media usage and the well-being of young people in Benin City, providing a comprehensive framework for navigating this complex issue effectively.
