ABSTRACT
The study investigated the level of Edo State Government involvement in adult literacy programme in Oredo Local Government Area. In order to attain the objectives of the study, three research questions and corresponding hypotheses were raised to guide the study. Descriptive survey research design was adopted by the researcher for the study. The targeted population for this study comprised of adult literacy programme organizers and coordinators, instructors and facilitators, and the adult learners in Oredo Government Area of Edo state with the population of 8, 14, and 100 respectively. There are twenty (20) adult literacy centres in Oredo Government Area Edo State. The simple and sampling technique was adopted for the study. Ten (10) Centres were chosen for this study, out of which eight (8) organizers and coordinators, fourteen (14) instructors and facilitators, and ten (10) learners each were chosen from the centres, all were randomly selected to have a total of 122 samples for this study. A structured questionnaire titled: Government Involvement in Adult Literacy Programme Questionnaire (GALIPQ) was adopted to gather data for the study. The test re-test method was carried out by first administering the questionnaire to the forty participants and re-administered two weeks later. The researcher made a comparison between answers obtained in the test and retest of questionnaire. Its coefficient of reliability was 0.71. Data were collected analyzed using descriptive statistic (frequency count and percentage) for both demographic data and to answer the research questions. The study found that the level of Edo State Government involvement in adult literacy programme was low in Oredo Local Government, Edo State Government initiative for innovation to improve the adult literacy programme since its inception Oredo Local Government Area was only shown in the area of free tuition fee and encouragement of private in the establishment of literacy centres. Based on the findings of the study, it was recommended that: Government should try and contribute to the adult literacy programme for effective running of the programme and for proper delivery of instructions, the government should provide incentives and vocational training centres that would help in improving the skills of the literacy programme stakeholders amongst others.
