ABSTRACT

Effective job performance in secretarial roles not only relies on technical skills but also on the ability to handle interpersonal interactions with tact, sensitivity, and emotional intelligence. The quality of workplace relationships significantly impacts overall job satisfaction, productivity, and the success of an organization. As secretaries often serve as intermediaries, interacting with colleagues, superiors, clients, and other external stakeholders, the ability to build and maintain positive relationships is crucial. In an era characterized by dynamic workplace environments and intricate interpersonal dynamics, the role of emotional intelligence has emerged as a pivotal factor in determining the job performance and workplace relationships of secretarial professionals. This study set out to explore the multifaceted connections between emotional intelligence, empathy, communication, conflict management skills, and their impact on job performance and workplace relationships within the Edo State Secretariat Complex. The research study made use of both descriptive and inferential statistic in analysis data. The sample selected for the study was limited to 50 secretaries in the Edo State Secretariat complex along Sapele Road, Benin City, Edo State. The sample was gathered through random sampling technique from the secretariat complex with various governmental ministries and parastatals. The instrument used for the collection of data was structural questionnaire, interview and observation. The reliability of the research instrument were determined by using Cronbach Alpha which value was .965 indicating that the instrument is highly consistent and reliable. In weaving these findings together from this study, it becomes evident that emotional intelligence is not a singular trait but rather an interwoven tapestry of skills that collectively shape the landscape of secretarial job performance and workplace relationships. Organizations that prioritize the cultivation of these skills can anticipate elevated levels of job performance, effective communication, and a more cohesive and amicable work environment.
