ABSTRACT
Fuel subsidy remains a contentious and divisive subject globally, especially in Nigeria. The study investigated the assessment of the effect of fuel subsidy removal policy on students of the University of Benin, Benin City, Nigeria. The objective of the study aimed at investigating the effects of the fuel subsidy removal policy on the spending patterns of the university students, their perceptions on the policy and the coping strategies adopted in response.
The study adopted a survey research designusing purposive and simple random sampling techniques. Data were elicited using close-ended structured questionnaire administered to three hundred students. Descriptive and inferential statistical tools such as percentages, frequency distribution, and Chi-square analysis were employed for data analysis. Hypotheses were tested at 5% level of significance.
The results of the study revealed that the implementation of the fuel subsidy removal policy significantly affected the spending patterns of the university students and their subsequent coping mechanisms. Government and institutional interventions such as food and transportation vouchers, cash transfer scheme and expanded housing options were recommended to cushion the effects of the fuel subsidy removal policy on university students.
