ABSTRACT
The present study entailed an analysis of figurative expressions in the Nigerian Police force with a focus on the figurative expressions used in field operations. The research area was Edo State Division. The data employed for the research were gotten from recordings of field operations, live field operations and police field operations’ documents. The instrument used by the researcher to gather data was the tape recorder and writing materials. The theoretical framework employed is the ethnography of communication, Hymes (1974) while the translation approach is the figurative translation in performative translatology, Uwajeh (1994). The work falls under documentary and descriptive linguistics. The findings of the study revealed that these figurative expressions are used to ensure that the ordinary civilian does not comprehend a security discussion, the figures that are used entail the use of colours, animals and areal names, the understanding of these police idioms contributes a lot to the success or failure of an operation, among others.
