AMELIORATIVE POTENTIAL OF VITAMIN E ON COPPER SULPHATE INDUCED SPLENOTOXICITY IN ADULT WISTAR RATS

ABSTRACT

Copper sulfate, an extensively used compound in various industries, poses environmental risks due to its release from anthropogenic activities. Vitamin E, known for its antioxidant properties, emerges as a potential protective agent against copper sulfate-induced damage to vital organs like the spleen. This study aimed to evaluate the potential ameliorative effect of Vitamin E on splenic damage induced by copper sulfate in adult Wistar rats. Twenty-five adult Wistar rats were divided into five groups and subjected to different treatments: control, copper sulfate only, Vitamin E only, copper sulfate followed by Vitamin E, and copper sulfate followed by distilled water. The experiment lasted for a total period of 60 days. Various hematological parameters were assessed using standard methods. The rats were sacrificed, and their spleens were histologically examined. The rats treated with copper sulfate showed significant alterations in hematological parameters, indicating splenic damage. However, administration of Vitamin E alongside copper sulfate mitigated these effects, as evidenced by improvements in red blood cell levels, hemoglobin concentration, and histological examination showing normal spleen architecture. Vitamin E demonstrates a potential protective role against copper sulfate-induced splenic damage in adult Wistar rats. Further studies are warranted to elucidate the underlying mechanisms and explore its therapeutic potential in mitigating environmental toxin-induced organ damage.
