ABSTRACT
Bisphenol A (BPA) is an industrial component commonly used in synthesis of polycarbonate plastics, epoxy resin and other polymer materials. Due to its mass productions and widespread applications, the presence of BPA is ubiquitous in the environment. BPA also induces ROS mediated oxidative stress by decreasing antioxidant enzymes (especially, superoxide dismutase, catalase, GSH reductase and GSH peroxidase) and by increasing reactive oxygen species. Naringenin (NAR), a flavanone, occurs almost exclusively in citrus fruits and is the most abundant flavonoid in these vegetables. They have been reported to have antoxidant and anti inflammatory properties. This study was carried out to investigate the ameliorative effect of naringenin in bisphenol A induced toxicity in wistar rats. Twenty (20) adult wistar rats weighing between 180 – 250g were employed for this study. The rats were randomly selected in four groups with each group containing five (5) rats (n=5). Group A: Control; were fed with rat chow and water ad libitium while Group B received BPA (50 mg/kg), Group C received NRG (100 mg/kg) and Group D were post treated with naringenin(100 mg/kg) for 14 days after 14 days administration of BPA(50 mg/kg). These compounds were administered intraperitoneally. The experimental period lasted for 28 days after which the animals were sacrificed. Result shows a significant increase in CAT in BPA(14days) + NAR (14days) when compared with the BPA only group (p<0.05). There was a significant reduction in CAT in BPA only treated groups when compared with the control only (p<0.05).
