ABSTRACT
A total of thirty tadpoles was collected from the three different sites. The study recorded shrivelled inhibitor enzymes antioxidant, superoxide, catalase, glutathione peroxidase, and dismutase and activities within the tail of the tadpoles from the sites that are highly polluted when compared with control. Tadpoles from slaughter environs had the highest level of stress enzymes in comparison to Nifor-dump post while those from Capitol showed the lowest levels.These findings suggest that environmental factors such as pollution and exposure to contaminants, may be influencing the antioxidants status of amphibians in the studied areas. Heavy metals such as Iron (Fe), Copper (Cu) and Zinc (Zn) were absent in the water samples gotten from these sites. Nifor dump post had the highest values of total dissolved solids (TDS), biochemical oxygen demand (BOD) and chemical oxygen demand (COD) in comparison to the other two sites. The study highlights the importance of using tadpole of Xenopus laevis as a sentinel specie for monitoring environmental changes and assessing potential ecological risks. Understanding alterations in antioxidant levels in amphibians can contribute to a better comprehension of local environmental conditions and aid in developing strategies for the conservation and management of ecosystems in Benin City.
