ABSTRACT
This research was carried out to evaluate the air borne fungi load in and around dumpsites in Benin city. Standard fungal enumeration methods were used to enumerate the total fungal count of the airborne fungi in dumpsite and within the dumpsite. The fungal isolates were characterized and identified using morphological and cultural method. The percentage distribution and frequency of the isolates were evaluated using statistical method. The results showed that the enumeration of fungi population obtained from the onsite region appeared higher using both Sabouraud Dextrose Agar (SDA) and Potato Dextrose Agar (PDA) The value ranged at 94.0 x 103 cfu/g and this fungal population decreased as the sampling distance increases. Following the cultural and morphological characteristic, the fungal isolates obtained include Aspergillus niger, Aspergillus fumigatus, Penicillium chrysogenum, Penicillium citrinum and Alternari sp. The presence of the isolated and identified fungal organisms have significant impact on human health and the environment.
