ABSTRACT

Microorganisms are living things ordinarily too small to be seen without magnification, in terms of numbers and range of distribution, microbes are the dominant organisms on earth. A large and diverse group of microscopic organisms that exist as single cells or cell clusters; it also includes viruses, which are microscopic but not cellular. Sample was collected using the Sedimentation Technique with specific culture media. Prepared plates of nutrient agar were exposed to air at 1meter far from the ground for 15mins at different sites in the respective wages and salary office. After sampling, all plates were immediately taken to the microbiology laboratory and incubated at 37ºC for 24 hours for isolation of bacteria. The result from this research showed the isolation of 4 bacterial isolates. They are identified and characterized to be Acinetobacter, Bacillus.spp, Enterococcus and Staph.spp which range from 6.81 cfu/m3 to 44.35 cfu/m3. The frequency of occurrence of bacterial isolates in the different sampling site for the month of Jan. bacillus.spp recorded 50.1 and Acinetobacter recorded 33.34. the zone of inhibition of the antibiotic susceptibility pattern of Gram positive bacterial showed that Enterococcus were more Resistant to most of the antibiotics while the zone of inhibition of the antibiotic susceptibility pattern of Gram negative bacterial show Acinetobacter was more susceptible to most of the antibiotic. The acquisition of potentially pathogenic microorganism from the Department of Wages and Salary which can cause life threatening infection necessitates the recommendation that improved hygiene procedures such as regular cleaning, sweeping and disinfection of surfaces be put in places for the staff use.
