ABSTRACT

Air quality is a critical determinant of public health, particularly in densely populated areas like university campuses. The study aim to determine the concentrations of formaldehyde (HCHO), total volatile organic compounds (TVOC), particulate matter (PM2.5, PM10), carbon monoxide (CO), and carbon dioxide (CO2) at selected locations within the campus and compare them against established air quality standards. The methodology involved the use of portable air quality monitors to collect data during peak and off-peak hours, with subsequent analysis using ANOVA in Microsoft Excel. Results revealed that formaldehyde (HCHO) and total volatile organic compounds (TVOC) concentrations were below acceptable standards, indicating good air quality. However, particulate matter (PM2.5 and PM10) levels exceeded recommended limits, particularly during peak hours, suggesting the need for mitigation measures to reduce exposure to particulate matter pollutants. Carbon monoxide (CO) and carbon dioxide (CO2) levels remained within acceptable ranges, with minor variations between peak and off-peak hours. The findings underscore the importance of addressing air quality concerns on university campuses to safeguard the health and well-being of students, faculty, and staff. Recommendations include improved ventilation systems, regular air quality monitoring and creating of more green spaces. This comprehensive assessment provides valuable insights into the air quality dynamics within the University of Benin Ugbowo campus and serves as a foundation for future research and intervention strategies.
