ABSTRACT
There is no doubt housing is one of the most basic needs of life, as such people endeavor to own one. In developing countries like Nigeria, there has been a huge disconnect between the government and the people regarding the issue of housing, despite the existence of Federal Housing Authority in the country. Even with the effort put by the Nigerian government to curb the issue of housing shortage and provide housing for its citizens, housing still seems to be beyond the reach of low-income earners as this class of people cannot afford the ones which are in place, as statistics according to the Federal Mortgage Bank of Nigeria has shown that 90 million Nigerians cannot afford a decent accommodation. The issue of affordability of houses by low-income earners in Nigeria is the reason why this research is being carried out. The paper analyses the need for more low-income housing in Nigeria, as well as recommending affordable structural materials as a strategy for building more low-income houses in the country.
