ABSTRACT
This study is a comparative analysis of affixation of the Mbaise dialect and the standard dialect. It examines affixation in Mbaise dialect and accounts for the strategies for deriving tense, aspect and mood in the dialect.
The theoretical framework for the study was based on the comparative linguistics, bringing the differences and similarities: the standard dialect and the Mbaise dialect of Igbo have.
The researcher found that the most attested affix in the dialect is the suffix because it is predominant in forming tense, aspect and mood. It was also observed that the formation of the progressive aspect in the dialects differ from that of the standard dialect. This work looked into only the formation of tense, aspect, and mood, comparing the two dialects. It will be more relevant to morphological development if other researchers can research into other similar work in the other dialects of Igbo using comparative linguistics for its analysis.
