ABSTRACT
The study examined the adult literacy programmes for economic development in Nigeria: a case study Benin Metropolis. To achieve the purpose of this study four research questions were raised to guide the study. The descriptive survey design was adopted to select a sample of seventy-seven (77) respondents selected through simple random sampling technique from six (6) literacy centres in Benin Metropolis. The questionnaire titled “Adult Literacy programme for Economic Development (ALPEDQ) “was the instrument used for data collection. The data collected were analyzed using descriptive statistics of frequency counts, simple percentage and mean score analysis. The findings revealed that functional literacy, Women literacy, Agriculture Extension and Pre-retirement education programmes are the various adult literacy programmes available for economic development in Benin Metropolis. Adult Literacy programme has also contributed to the economic development in Benin Metropolis by improving employment opportunities, positively changing the lives of individuals, helping individuals to participate more fully in civic, political and social life and improving their health and wellbeing. Also, the extent of the availability of adult literacy programmes aiding Economic development in Benin Metropolis is low. Based on findings, it was recommended that since the extent of the availability of adult literacy programme in Benin Metropolis is low, it is therefore imperative for the government and non-governmental agencies to intervene to boost the availability of the programme in the state. And there is need for the government to intervene in the challenges faced with the implementation of adult literacy programmes to aid economic development which are insufficient funding, language barriers, instructors with limited qualifications, limited access to books and tools, lack of attention and involvement of local communities and lack of widespread knowledge about recent policy initiatives on adult literacy programmes. It is suggested that further studies should be carried in areas such as the appraisal of Adult education programmes to curb socio economic challenges in Benin Metropolis and also the assessment of government efforts in promoting participation in adult literacy programmes in Benin Metropolis.
