ADULT LEARNERS PARTICIPATION IN FUNCTIONAL LITERACY PROGRAMMES IN BENIN CITY

ABSTRACT

This study examined adult learners participation in functional literacy programmes in Benin city.

This study employed the descriptive research design. Four research questions were raised and answered in the study. The population of study consist all adults in functional literacy centres in Benin City. 100 adults were randomly selected as sample of the study. The instrument used for study was a self-designed questionnaire validated and tested for reliability through the test - retest method. Data collected were analyzed using simple percentage and diagram presentation.

The finding of the study revealed that there is low awareness and participation of adult learners in functional literacy programmes in Benin City. Literacy skills enhance learners skills for gainful employment. Functional literacy programmes enables trainee to become productive and useful citizens. Functional literacy programmes boosts communication skills of participants for economic and social productivities. Functional literacy programmes improves ones socio-economic well-being of participants and lays foundation for further learning. There is low level of government commitments towards providing functional literacy programmes in Benin City. This study recommends that functional literacy programmes should be adequately provided for improved participation.
