Summary
This study examined that the sexuality, knowledge, accessibility, usage and barriers to contraception as observed and experienced by adolescents. Also, the study specifically ascertained the following: adolescent sexual behaviour; adolescents’ level of awareness of contraceptives; level of usage of contraceptives among adolescents and the level of accessibility to contraceptives among adolescents.
The study was limited to adolescents who are in public secondary schools located in Oredo Local Government Area of Edo State, Nigeria. Thus, the study participants were senior secondary school students in Oredo Local Government Area of Edo State.
Categorical variables were reported as percentages and chi-square statistics was used in analyzing the research hypotheses.
From the analysis carried out, the following were revealed:
i.) The study shows that there is significant difference between gender and adolescent sexual behaviour. Specifically, with respect to this findings, the study shows that the sexual behaviour of adolescents in Oredo Local Government Area of Edo State tend to be negative.
ii.) There is significant difference between gender and the level of awareness of contraceptives among adolescents. Also, specifically, the respondents seem to be quite aware of contraceptives.
iii.) The study showed that there is significant difference between gender and the level of contraceptives use among adolescents. Specifically, the female folks tend to make use of contraceptives than the male students.
