ABSTRACT

This study investigates the impact of non-formal education programmes in promoting sustainable development and environmental awareness among adult learners in Oredo Local Government Area of Edo State. Four (4) research questions were raised to guide the study. A sample size of 200 adult learners were used for the study using adult learners who are registered in non-formal education programmes in Oredo local government area of Edo state. The questionnaire was designed and validated by experts in the department of Adult and Non-formal Education, Faculty of Education, University of Benin. Data were analysed using descriptive statistical techniques such as basic percentage calculations, counting frequencies and analysing mean score. Findings of the study revealed that Encouraging community members participation, mobilising community members regarding the engagement and support, providing the needed support in the community to facilitate the smooth implementation, and collaborating with the Non-formal education initiatives providers in the community so as to aid easy implementation of their programme in the community, are the role do community stakeholders, including (government agencies, NGOs, educational institutions and local leaders) play in supporting and enhancing Non-formal educational initiatives for sustainable development in Oredo Local Government Area. More so, the extent to x Non-formal education programmes contribute to promoting sustainable development and environmental awareness among adult learners in the Oredo Local Government Area is Low. It was further recommended that, since it has been confirmed that the extent to which Non-formal education programmes contribute to promoting sustainable development and environmental awareness among adult learners in the Oredo Local Government Area is Low, it is therefore important for the government to increase their commitment into promoting sustainable development and environmental awareness in the study area.
