ACCESSIBILITY OFLIBRARY RESOURCES AND LIBRARY STAFF ATTITUDE AS FACTOR INFLUENCING UNDERGRADUATES’READING HABIT IN PRIVATE UNIVERSITIES IN NIGERIA

ABSTRACT

This study focused on the accessibility of library resources and library staff attitude as factors influencing undergraduates' reading habit in private universities in Nigeria. To make this possible for research questions and purpose of the study was raised to investigate the reading habit of the undergraduates in private universities in Nigeria;determine the attitude of library staff towards undergraduate students' use of library resources; examine the level of undergraduate students' accessibility of library resources in private universities in Nigeria; and find out the factors affecting undergraduate's reading habit in private universities in Nigeria. Descriptive survey research design was adopted to accomplish the objectives of the study. The population of the study consists of 6,820 University of Benin undergraduates and the sample size of 341 students was used for the study. The instrument for data collection was the questionnaire developed by the researcher and was validated by the researcher's supervisor. The reliability coefficient is 0.81 and was obtained using Pearson's product moment correlation co-efficient (PPMCC). The data collected was analyzed statistically using statistical package of social sciences(SPSS) Software xiii The study discovered that the reading habit of undergraduate students in private university is good. Finally, the study recommends that library should devise alternate ways to overcome some of the perennial challenges such as power and that there should be regular programs for undergraduates to improve their reading culture
