ABSTRACT
Background/Aim: Sedentary behaviour (SB) has been associated with various adverse conditions, including sarcopenia. The association of SB with sarcopenia has been described previously on several occasions with adverse effects such as frailty, increased risk of falls and fractures and reduced mobility being reported. However, no cumulative evidence exists on the relationship between SB and sarcopenia in older adults. Thus, this study systematically reviewed the association between SB and sarcopenia in older adults. Methods: Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature (CINAHL), Medline, Web of Science Core Collections, Ageline, Scopus and African Journals Online (AJOL) databases were searched for studies on the relationship between SB and sarcopenia in older adults. The reference lists of included studies were further searched for eligible studies. Inclusion criteria comprised cross-sectional and longitudinal cohort studies, participants aged 60 years and above and only articles published in English language were used. Quality appraisal was conducted using the Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI) critical appraisal checklist for cross-sectional and longitudinal cohort studies. A narrative synthesis was used to present the findings. Result: A total of 12 articles were included in the review, 10 cross-sectional studies and 2 longitudinal studies. There was a high prevalence of sarcopenia (1.8% to 64.3%) in the older adult population of the included studies. A significant and positive association between SB and sarcopenia in older adults was reported in most of the cross-sectional studies, however, four studies (two cross-sectional and two longitudinal) reported a non-significant association between SB and sarcopenia in older adults. The quality of the included studies was adequate. Conclusion: The cumulative evidence shows a significant and positive association between sedentary behaviour and sarcopenia in older adults. A higher level of SB is associated with a higher odds of sarcopenia risk in older adults. SB should be reduced and replaced with physical activity to prevent sarcopenia and further longitudinal studies are required to examine the association between SB and sarcopenia in older adults.
