ABSTRACT
The nematode infections of 134 anurans belonging to 17 species from Ozomo community in Ovia North-East, Edo State was investigated. The various species of anuran hosts examined included: Arthroleptis poecilonotus, Arthroleptis sp., Leptopelis occidentalis, L. spiritusnoctus, Amietophrynus maculatus, Hoplobatrachus occipitalis, Hyperolius concolor, H. fusciventris, Hyperolius sp., Afrixalus dorsalis, Ptychadena bibroni, Pty. longirostris, Pty. mascareniensis, Pty. oxyrhynchus, Pty. pumilio, Hemisus marmoratus and Silurana tropicalis. An overall prevalence of 46.3% and a mean intensity of 6.2 parasite/infected host were recorded. Nine nematode species were recovered, these were Camallanus dimitrovi, Chabaudus leberrei, Cosmocerca commutata, C. ornata, Amplicaecum sp., Aplectana sp., Chenospirura sp., Physaloptera sp. and Rhabdias sp. Among the anurans examined, Pty. mascareniensis and Pty. pumilio were the most infected with prevalence of 94.4% and 77.2% respectively. The male anuran species had a higher prevalence (46.9%) of nematode parasite infections than their female counterpart (45.1%). More anuran hosts were examined during the wet season, however, a higher prevalence (52.1%) was recorded in the dry season. Mixed infection of C. dimitrovi and C. leberrei were encountered in Hoplobatrachus occipitalis in this study.
