ABSTRACT
The study was aimed at documenting the arthropods of forensic importance on guinea pig carrions in University of Benin. A total of six healthy guinea pigs carrions were used for this research, they were killed through cervical dislocation and their decomposition rate were monitored for 28 days, from October to November, 2019 at the Ugbowo campus of the University of Benin. The result revealed 5 distinct stages of decomposition which include fresh, bloated, active decay, advance decay and dry decay stages. A total of 238 insects were encountered during the period of sampling. This insects encountered covered four order which include Diptera, Coleoptera, Hymenopteran and Lepidoptera. The Diptera order was the most abundance followed by Coleoptera, Hymenoptera and Lepidoptera respectively. Eight swings using insect net were used for each visit to the study site. The family Muscidae, Dermestidae, Sarcophagidae and Calliphoridae were considered very important as they played a major role in the carrion decomposition.
