ABSTRACT
This research examines the literary work "An American Marriage" by Tayari Jones, exploring the themes of racial inequality, the flaws within the criminal justice system, betrayal, love, family bond, incarceration and relationship. This study takes a critical stylistic analysis of the narrative technique and viewpoint of the novel. This study focuses on the remarkable aspect of this work, the use of the epistolary form, multiple narrators, character centered chapters, multiple narrators, flash back, interior monologue, first and third person point of view, and distorted time frame. The book is structured into chapters, each narrated from the perspective of Roy, Celestial, and Andre, which offers a uniqueness to the unfolding story. Through these perspectives, the novel portrays the different dynamics of human connections, the burden of societal injustice, and the enduring strength of individuals in the face of adversity. The exchange of letters in the novel is not just a plot device, it is a profound exploration of emotions, desires, and the struggles of the characters. Mr. Davenport's letters bring to the forefront larger societal issues, such as racial inequality and the criminal justice system, enhancing the novel's relevance and depth. The exceptional literary craftsmanship of Tayari Jones is highlighted and her unique style in writing. It emphasized that "An American Marriage" is not just a story but a reflection of the human experience. The novel was praised for its ability to transcend time, urging us to seek justice, appreciate love, and recognize the power of storytelling in all its forms.
