ABSTRACT
This study examines the practice and impact of widowhood on both widows and widowers in Ila-Orangun. This study of widowhood involves examining the various widowhood practices 61 that existed in Ila-Orangun and the reasons why the practices are performed by widows and widowers, also examining the impacts both positive and negative that these practices had on widows and widowers that performed these rites. These widowhood practices are peculiar to various societies and families in Ila-Orangun. It is evident that different families and religions most especially the Islam religion had the different practices which they believed should be carried out by widows after the death of their spouse. What brought about this study is the story of a woman who married the first born son of a family and after his death was made to marry her husband’s brother and practiced all other widowhood rites like sleeping on the floor for a period of time. This woman unfortunately lost all her husbands’ who were brothers from the first to the sixth son of the family. She was made to marry her husbands’ younger brother as the new husband died till she married the sixth son of the family. From the story of this woman it is evident that widowhood practice in Ila-Orangun is well observed and practiced with all loyalty.
