ABSTRACT
The present study investigated the marking of the inherent grammatical category of nominal and verb classes. Inherent category is a concept under the term “Grammatical Category”, it is a property a word either intrinsically have or does not have such as tense for verbs and number for nouns.The focus in this study was to look into the nature of the inherent grammatical category in order to know how they function and marked either morphologically, phonologically or lexically in Achina dialect of Igbo, hence this study relied on primary and secondary data. The primary data were in form of oral data which were collected from native speakers of the language withquestions using the Ibadan 400 word list, their responses were written down on a book. The secondary data comprises forms from already published works such as journals, article online and textbooks. The collected data were verified by some language teachers, and the basic linguistics theory by R.N.W Dixon was used as the theoretical framework We discovered that Achina is a dialect that uses the standard orthography system of the Igboid group of languages and we also discovered that Achina dialect does not mark gender or definiteness. In conclusion, we discovered that most of these inherent grammatical categories are marked lexically in Achina dialect of Igbo.
