ABSTRACT
This dissertation examines the growing use of prefabricated design in architecture in Benin City, Nigeria and its impact on the built environment. Prefabricated construction, where building components are manufactured off-site and assembled on-site, has become increasingly popular in recent years as a faster, more cost-effective alternative to traditional construction methods. Quantitative interviews were conducted with architects, developers, and residents to gather diverse perspectives on the benefits and drawbacks of prefabricated construction.
The findings suggest that prefabricated design has enabled the rapid development of affordable housing and commercial spaces in Benin City. Standardized components and streamlined assembly processes have reduced construction timelines and costs. However, concerns were raised about the aesthetic quality and long-term durability of prefabricated buildings compared to traditional masonry construction.
This research concludes that while prefabricated construction has significant potential to address housing shortages and spur economic growth in Benin City, more research is needed on improving the design and sustainability of prefabricated systems. Collaboration between architects, engineers, and local stakeholders will be key to ensuring prefab developments enhance rather than detract from the city's built environment. Overall, this study provides valuable insights into the emerging role of prefabricated design in Nigerian architecture and urbanism.
