ABSTRACT
The effect of watering regimes on Corchorus olitorius was investigated using four irrigation strategies. The experiment was replicated six times in a typical clay-loam soil at the screen house of the Department of Plant Biology and Biotechnology of the University of Benin, Benin-city, Nigeria. The results showed that the Corchorus olitorius watered daily had significantly more leaves (51±17.08), greater leaf area (734.29±334.54), greater plant height (41.83±6.82) and higher biomass compared to the plants watered every two days (37.5±10.95), (456.50±177.23), (39.07±8.07) and the plants subjected to drought (18.33±8.43), (86.44±67.60), (29.60±3.41) and (4.33±2.55), (32.94±38.29), (12.33±3.57) flooded treatments. The results showed a significant reduction in biomass, plant height and leaf number with decreasing water application and the development of adventitious roots in water-logged plants. It was observed that Corchorus olitorius was best grown in well-irrigated conditions.
