ABSTRACT
Mushrooms are like mannas and their water heal eye diseases. To determine the effect of aqueous mushroom extract on intraocular pressure, 6 healthy medium-sized cats were used for this study. After acclimatizing for two weeks, the baseline intraocular pressure was taken. Aqueous mushroom extract (40mg/ml 1gutt tid 2/52) was then applied to the right eyes of the cats for two weeks while left eye was taken as the control and intraocular pressure reading was taken using manometric method. Aqueous mushroom extract was then applied to the right eye for another two weeks making four weeks with left eyes as the control and intraocular pressure reading taken by manometric method. Aqueous mushroom extract decreased intraocular pressure by 10.5% compared to the baseline after two weeks while after four weeks it decreased intraocular pressure by 23.18% compared to baseline. It was observed that there was a significant difference between the IOP of the control and the IOP of the experimental group after 2 weeks of instilling aqueous pleurotus tuberregium extract. P<0.05(P=0.01).It was also observed that there was a significant difference between the IOP of the control and IOP of the experimental group after 4 weeks P<0.05(P=0.02).Data obtained during this study was analyzed using paired t-test(SPSS version 22.0) and it showed that aqueous mushroom extract decreases intraocular pressure.
