ABSTRACT

The insurgency in Nigeria's northeast region, spearheaded by Boko Haram and its splinter factions, has posed a significant challenge to national security for over a decade. With factors such as socioeconomic disparities taken into account, this study has unraveled the complexity of northeastern insurgency, simply known as Boko Haram, producing key Findings such as the origins of the sect, the factors which created fertile ground for insurgency to thrive, namely socioeconomic and religious disparities and the strategies employed by the Nigerian government toward tackling the nagging issue which has plagued the country since the 2000's. These efforts were largely carried out by military campaigns such as Lafiya dole, Sharan daji amongst others. The Nigerian sense of solidarity in combating insurgent threats has been broadly reflected as seen in their participating in foreign counterinsurgency operations.
