ABSTRACT
A study of home gardens at the Nigerian Institute for Oil- Palm Research (NIFOR), Benin City was carried out. The results showed that home gardens were mainly located around the houses. The gardens varied in size, diversity and structure. Many of the plants have multipurpose values and a primary function of supplementing food security and general wellbeing. The gardens contained plants of various habits such as trees, herbs and shrubs. Some of the plants are sources of fruits, spices and medicines while others are weeds or ornamental plants. Home gardens serve as in-situ conservation site for many crops such as Elaeis guineensis, Cocos nucifera, , Dioscorea spp. (yam) , Colocasia esculenta, Musa paradisiaca, Carica papaya, Cucurbita maxima. Products of home gardens not consumed are sold in the market and help increase household income and improve family nutrition. Manure derived from household wastes are usually used to improve soil fertility.
