ABSTRACTFire is a potentially devastating force that can have a wide range of effects on people, property and ultimately, the environment. Fire safety in public buildings is a critical issue that requires a comprehensive approach to address all the potential risks. There has been asignificant increase in fire cases in Edo state over the past years, the constant increase in fire cases has been an ultimate threat to buildings, their occupants, and the economic growth of the state and country at large, Hence this research explores the assessment of the adequacy of fire safety for public buildings in Benin city which includes schools, hospitals, offices, markets and other commercial buildings. This research aims to provide adequate knowledge on various factors that contribute to the risk of fire in public buildings including the different types of materials used in the construction, design and layout of the building, including the presence of potential ignition source. It also raises awareness about the causes of fire, the consequences of fire events and its prevention to preserve lives and properties. This research sits on case studies of real-world examples of fire cases in public buildings in Benin City. The casesexamined in this study will provide examples of the types of fires that can occur in public buildings and the factors that can contribute to these fires. This research further provides solutions that can be implemented to reduce these risks such as the installation of fire alarms, sprinkler systems, the use of fire-resistant materials in construction, the creation of safe escape routes, and regular maintenance and inspections. By implementing these measures, there can be a reduction in the risk of fire and mitigate its effects if it happens.
