ABSTRACT
The construction and operation of large dam projects disrupted river ecosystems and displaced communities, posing significant risks to wildlife and residents. While hydroelectric projects are essential for meeting a country's growing energy demands, the lack of comprehensive understanding and effective management strategies for mitigating these impacts hampered their sustainable development. The study aimed to address the aforementioned knowledge gap by conducting in-depth study that systematically analyzed the environmental consequences, social disruptions, and community responses associated with hydroelectric power initiatives. Additionally, the study aimed to identify and propose feasible mitigation measures to address both environmental and social challenges associated with hydroelectric power projects. The method employed for the identification and understanding of the environmental and social impact was the qualitative assessment. The environmental and social impacts of the hydropower project were assessed by following a structured approach that involved assigning importance weighting to different impact categories based on expert judgment and then translating predicted impacts into numerical rankings. The environmental and social impact assessment of the hydropower project revealed various significant impacts across physical, biological, socio-economic, and cultural aspects. Physically, the project led to adverse effects on air quality, land use, as well as changes in hydrology and sedimentation. Biologically, the project resulted in Deforestation, impacts on biodiversity including rare, endangered species, and effects on fish migration. Socioeconomically and culturally, the project caused the loss of agricultural land, cultural Heritage impacts, and public health concerns. However, it also had potential benefits such as promoting rural electrification, industrialization, and eco-tourism. To address the identified impacts, it was recommended to implement comprehensive mitigation measures. These measures included erosion control strategies, biodiversity conservation efforts, socio-economic support for affected communities, and monitoring programs to track the effectiveness of mitigation measures. Additionally, stakeholder engagement and consultation were prioritized to ensure that the concerns and perspectives of all relevant parties were considered in decision-making processes. Furthermore, there was a need for adaptive management approaches to address emerging challenges and uncertainties throughout the project lifecycle.
