ABSTRACT
This study examines the crisis and conflict management in Nigeria; the Nigerian civil war as a case study. The work looked into the concept of conflict and conflict management, the factors that contributed to the outbreak of the Nigerian civil war, it discusses the dimensions and impact of the Nigerian civil war, as well as the various conflict management strategies that were adopted in resolving the Nigerian civil war. The study found that the war which broke out on the 6 th of July 1967, was as a result of the culmination of an uneasy peace and instability that troubled the nation from independence. The study found that the primary cause of the Nigerian civil war, was as a result deep-seated ethnic and regional tensions. The sheer diversity in culture, language, historical background as a result of the numerous ethnic groups, laid the ground work for potential ethnic conflicts. This was further aggravated by the struggle for political power and influence which further exacerbated tensions. This was exemplified by the apparent competition for political power at the national regions with their political parties (Northern Nigeria; The Northern People’s Congress(NPC), Western Nigeria; the Yoruba formed the Action Group (AG); Eastern Nigeria, the main political party was the National convention for Nigerian citizens (NCNC), while other tribes were conveniently grouped into “minorities” the three major ethnic groups vied for influence which led to 87 significant political and ethnic rivalries, as each political leaders and parties often pursued regional interests over national unity.
