ABSTRACT
This research project offers a unique exploration on a pragmatic study of child naming ceremony in yoruba culture by drawing upon personal experience and observation within the yoruba culture. child naming ceremonies hold profound cultural significance, blending traditions, social dynamic and linguistics pragmatics. This research investigates the linguistics pragmatics inherent in naming ceremonies, with a particular focus on the speech acts involved, the rationale behind name choices, and these names. This works aim at examining and describing the naming activities and object of the ceremony among the yoruba people. Data gathered for this study were collected from personal interview and from the researcher's participation in the ceremony. The study is analyzed using ethnography of communication as presented. The major findings of this study however, reveals that the choice vof a name given to a child is dependent on the situation surrounding the child's birth and this goes a long way in determining the factor of the additionally, the project scrutinizes how the yoruba naming ceremony reflect the broader cultural and social values held within the yoruba community.
