ABSTRACT
This study examines the use of derogatory terms to refer to women in Esan, a language spoken in Edo State, Nigeria. Using a sociolinguistic approach, this research investigates the social contexts in which these terms are used, the attitudes and perceptions of Esan speakers towards these terms, and the implications for women's social status and empowerment. The findings of this study reveal that derogatory terms are commonly used to refer to women in Esan, often in informal settings, and that these terms reflect and reinforce patriarchal attitudes towards women.
The study examines the language attitudes and ideologies that underlie the use of these terms, and investigates the impact on women's social status, empowerment, and well-being. The findings of this study also contribute to our understanding of the complex relationships between language, culture, and power, and highlight the need for language education and reform to promote more respectful and inclusive language use. The findings also reveal that derogatory terms are widespread in Esan, and that these terms are often used to assert power and control over women. The study concludes by highlighting the need for language reform and education to challenge patriarchal language use and promote more equitable and respectful communication.
The study adopts a qualitative approach. The data for this research were obtained through interviews and observation. Interviews with native Esan speakers from different age levels to provide a glimpse into what they have to say about women derogatory terms. The study adopts Dell Hymes' SPEAKING MODEL under the ethnography of communication theory.. The findings of this study reveals the use of language use in Edo society. One of the notable findings is that language is utilized to mirror and reinforce social norms.
