ABSTRACT

The research explores the sociolinguistic study of riddles in Edo language. It examines and focusses on riddles and their function in our society, also examines how riddles are used and who uses them. The qualitative and analytic research designs were employed in this study. Dell Hyme’s Ethnography of Communication theory served as the theoretical framework in analysing the data that was collated. The SPEAKING model theory was used because it accounts for all parties involved, this is the sociolinguistic aspects integrated in the use of a riddle i.e., participants, scene, setting, key, ends. Which gives a clearer view of the context of the riddles used for better understanding for both Edo and non- Edo speakers respectively.
