ABSTRACT
The present research discusses the socio linguistic view of "Euphemism" in Edo language. It is not a catalogue of the various Euphemistic forms in Edo. It tends to treat some basic forms that can give insight into the working of this phenomenon. The research seeks to enable more subtle tone to express all kinds of intense and unspeakable discourses and uses rich linguistics expressions to achieve unique rhetorical meanings and produces unique linguistic effects.
The study employed pragmatic principles as a tool of investigation, which centers. exclusively on the context of Euphemical use. This tool was used to analyzed the data obtained from traders and other categories of person engaged in one activity or the other in Uselu Market and motorist along the Oba palace. These data were obtained with the aid of one on one conversation in a bid to sample the people linguistic preference in Euphemism.
