ABSTRACT
This research examines Igarra folk songs from a sociolinguistic standpoint, focusing on their role in communication, cultural expression, and social unity within the Igarra community. By applying Dell Hymes’ SPEAKING model, the study explores the context, participants, and linguistic structures of selected songs. Data were obtained through field research, interviews, and archival sources, providing insight into the meanings and functions of these songs. The results indicate that Igarra folk songs serve various purposes, including storytelling, moral teachings, historical preservation, and strengthening communal ties. Features such as repetition, metaphors, and call-and-response patterns contribute to their effectiveness and longevity. The study concludes that these songs are a vital aspect of Igarra’s cultural heritage, underscoring the importance of documentation and continued research, especially in light of modernization.
