ABSTRACT
This project is based on a sociolinguistics analysis of body parts proverbs in Benin language. It’s aim is to examine how a particular proverb can be used in a particular situation or context because proverbs are only used when the situation warrants it. Method of data collection was the primary and secondary. The method used in this study for data collection is the participant observation method with the use of paper and pen. The theoretical framework adopted for this research is the speech acts theory proposed by J.L Austin (1962) and Searle (1969), the data was analyzed using the locutionary act, illocutionary act and the perlocutionary act. In this research, we found out the Benin body parts proverbs can serve different purposes, advice ,encouragement and caution also, we found out that the perlocution which is the effect of a word on an individual is not always as we predict it to be. In conclusion, this study has shown how proverbs are used in the Benin language to give advice, correct bad behaviours and also be used as words of encouragement to someone.
