CONCLUSION
This study examined the impact of western civilization on the social and economic activities of Uneme people. It maintained that the social and economic activities of a society can be viewed as a large set or series of inter-related activities that aid in determining how well structured and organized the setting of Uneme land looked like from pre-colonial period, also through colonial period. It also encompasses all activities related to production, consumption and trade of goods and services in an area.
Furthermore, the study examined the historical origin of the people of Uneme land. Although there are many controversies surrounding the origin, this research concluded that the origin of the Uneme people could be traced to the reign of Oba Ewuare of Benin, sometime in the fifteenth century. The Uneme people who migrated from the South and settled in the Northern part of modern Edo State. The death of Oba Ewuare’s two sons was a sad and great loss to him who in his characteristic high handedness decided on a set of mourning laws and forbade sexual intercourse, prohibited washing, sweeping, drumming or dancing and a ban was placed on fire making to prevent cooking for three years.
