ABSTRACT
Colors play a significant role in our daily lives, conveying emotions, cultural meanings, and aesthetic preferences. The Yoruba language, spoken predominantly in Western Nigeria, Togo Benin Republic and a few other parts incorporates a rich symbolism of colors deeply rooted in their culture, traditions, and religious practices. This abstract aims to explore the symbolism of colors in the Yoruba language, examining their historical, cultural, and psychological significance.The aim of this research is to analyze the symbolism of colors in the Yoruba language and elucidate their cultural and psychological connotations. The objectives include: exploring the psychological associations between colors and emotions in Yoruba cultural context and analyzing the application of color symbolism in Yoruba language and art.This research employs a semiotic approach, encompassing literature review, qualitative analysis of Yoruba cultural artifacts, interviews with Yoruba natives, to gather comprehensive information. The research findings reveal that colors hold intricate symbolism in the Yoruba language, reflecting a profound understanding of aesthetics, emotions, and spirituality. Black: Symbolizes power, elegance, and authority in Yoruba culture, associated with wisdom, mystery, and divinity. White: Signifies purity, spirituality, and sacredness, commonly used in religious ceremonies and as a symbol of ancestors.Red: Represents vitality, life force, and courage, associated with initiations, love, and passion.Blue: A color of deep symbolism, representing calmness, truth, and transcendence, often tied to deities and water-related rituals.vi) Green: Signifies growth, freshness, and fertility, reflecting the connection to nature and vegetation. The symbolism of colors in the Yoruba language is multifaceted and interwoven into various aspects of their culture, providing a glimpse into their cosmology, spirituality, and social practices.
