ABSTRACT
This study focuses on the semiotic analysis on some aspects of Esan burial rites. The specific objectives of the study were to; establish burial rituals that takes place in Esan land, to ascertain the functional roles played the signs and symbols and also to examine the cultural semiotic features that exists within the Esan burial rites. The area covered by this study is the Esan land in Edo State, Nigeria. The study employed a descriptive research method of qualitative research methodology. To achieve the aim of this study, the researcher used the tenets of the Functional approach and Cultural Semiotic theory as the theoretical approaches. From the study it is revealed that the traditional rites and rituals items used during burials depends on the kind of death, there are two kinds of burials in Esan land each kind consisting of different funeral days, the Esan people believe in the metaphysical world, women have dress codes for burials, symbolic items like the kolanut, goat, cow, fowl, are crucial in the process of burials in Esan land. Due to the paucity of literature in this dialect, the researcher however recommends that further study on symbolization in Esan, rituals in Esan land should be carried out.
