ABSTRACT

In this paper work, we shall be reading about Eyo as a traditional festival, festival is a celebration of a specific event to which the public is invited for a given season. The data collection for this study was sourced through fieldwork.  This work represents how cultures and traditions are portrayed through festivals and how Eyo has a traditional festival is been processed, helpful and added value to the people of lagos. The theoretical framework for this study was speech act theory. with this proposition, the research was able to find the concepts of semiotics.

We found out that there are signs and symbols in the eyo masquerade parade, language used by eyo masquerades has deep meanings, the eyo masquerades regalia connotes symbolic meanings and their Opambala (rod) has incisions that can be decoded through semiotics.

This paper work also shows us that, in urban times, festivals attracts tourism and also has impacts in the development of culture and traditions.
