ABSTRACT

The study “A Semiotic Account of Yoruba Traditional Marriages of Ifon-Osun People” is a qualitative research work that aims to give a detailed semiotic account of marriage ceremonies in the Ifon-Osun community, and to identify the symbols and signs used to convey meanings in these ceremonies. Data used for this work were collected through interviews and, participant observation. A traditional marriage that happened in Ifon-Osun, Osun state was used as field for the collection of data. The theoretical framework employed in this study is the Critical Discourse Analysis theory and the Pierce’s theory of signs. This study was able to make a compilation and analysis of the semiotics involved in Yoruba traditional marriages, and the conditions that affect how these meanings are interpreted.
