ABSTRACT
This stud is set out to examine the socio- cultural context in which personal names is used in Igbo language community. it also help us to understand that “CHI” can only appear at the word initial and final position of Igbo names. The data uses in the study were gathered through recording of utterances and through interview of Igbo native speakers. The two categories of “Chi” as prefixes and suffixes in Igbo personal names were identified and elaborated on discussed and analyzed. Using the descriptive framework by M.S Dryer (1976) he stated that this theory help in describing and analyzing the particular context, reasons and  circumstances that will make Igbo native speakers to identify or name their child with a peculiar name will be depend on the context that may lead to the birth of the child or the circumstances that warrant the child birth in Igbo language setting.
