ABSTRACT
This study is based on the linguistic comparison, analysis and number of the different varieties that exist within the language Edo. The various dialectal variations of the Edo languages shall be identified and effort shall be made to find out their linguistic relationship and to prove if all are mutually intelligible. In this work, word list and simple sentence formation shall be analysed to find out if all these varieties have a genetic and linguistic relationship. Efforts will also be made to compare the selected word list that is, in number, parts of the body, names of animals and natural objects. With this word list, we shall try to find out if these words form cognates. In addition, we shall with the cognates use the family tree methodology to show the relationship that exist within these varieties. Finally, we shall also examine the environmental or geographical and cultural influence on the Central Edo influence on the varieties that generated the slight dialectal varieties. The study is aimed at making a viable research to consolidate previous assertion that these varieties so claimed are actually variety of Edo language or a dialect of its own, which has been dominated by Edo language as a result of cultural conquest.
