ABSTRACT
This project is a documentation of proverbs in Usen with the aim to contribute to Nigeria’s ongoing efforts in linguistic preservation. While Nigeria has made significant efforts in documenting linguistic features, particularly in safeguarding endangered languages, there are still numerous languages awaiting documentation, this research primarily focuses on documenting Usen dialect proverbs, using Conceptual Semantic framework as its theoretical underpinning. For this project work the Researcher met with informant proficient in the Usen dialect. A list comprising of 28 Usen proverbs was compiled with the informants’ providing translations into English. Throughout the course of this study several key findings emerged. Notably it was observed that Usen proverbs are not commonly employed in everyday communication, furthermore, analysis revealed that each has specific categories they belong to serving as a vessel for conveying particular messages, another notable feature of the usen proverbs is the consistent use of metaphorical languages to pass across the intended messages of the speaker. The project serves as a significant step towards the preservation of Usen dialect proverbs, shedding light on their linguistic characteristic.
