ABSTRACT
Social media is seen by some as a new media for enhancing the learning environment. It is rich in tools which can help enhance interaction, discussion and the sharing of learning resources. This study investigated the opera mini news post on events in Nigeria with a view to dissecting the semantic structure of the messages or posts. The study was premised on the fact that most of the news posted on this media platform (opera mini) is poorly edited and considering the fact that many Nigerians do subscribe to this platform. Data were collected using a specially designed survey method whereby news dating from April to June, 2021 were read and downloaded. The sample size was a total of 200 screen shorted news posts and the author took time out to carefully read these posts and the comments made in response to these news by respondents. The results indicate that a majority of opera mini news posts as well as comments from the comment sections are poorly edited. The survey results highlighted a number of semantic issues stemming from the lack of coherence resulting from the absence of cohesion in the texts and compositions of the messages posted. The study also reports interesting differences in national and international news posts as the latter seems to possess more grammatical and semantic issues to the latter. The findings include the identification of ways this news can be properly edited before being disseminated to the general public. The findings can encourage linguists and information enthusiast to adopt and implement use of appropriate social media tools.
